Making the festival more sustainable is one of our most important missions.
One of the key tools in this work each year is obtaining the Sustainable Event certification from Greentime – and we’ve done it again!

– We are very proud to have reached such an important goal, says Filip Eklund, sustainability developer at Göteborg & Co.

As one of Gothenburg’s largest events, Göteborgs Kulturkalas influences both other organizers and festival visitors. Taking responsibility for sustainable development has therefore long been a given for the organization behind the event.

Each year, the event is certified as a Sustainable Event by Greentime. This sets a high standard and means we must place demands on ourselves as well as on our partners.

– We want to create a festival that is as responsible as it is fun and inspiring. Being certified is proof that we are on the right path,” says Filip Eklund, sustainability developer at Göteborg & Co.

This year’s major sustainability initiatives include making the BĂ€ltespĂ€nnarparken festival site single-use-free, with all plates, glasses, and cups being washed on-site.

The Sustainable Event certification is issued by Greentime, which engages independent auditors to review the sustainability efforts. To be approved, the event must meet a large number of requirements in the areas of organization, environment, and social sustainability. This includes aspects such as gender equality, accessibility, diversity, safety and security, waste, chemicals, transport, and energy.

– Working with sustainability and sustainable development within large events can be quite complex and extensive, but the certification process helps us structure and ensure the quality of our work,” says Filip Eklund. We’re proud to have reached such a significant milestone on our sustainability journey.

The certification is currently preliminary. The final certification will be issued after the event, once the responsible auditor has conducted on-site checks to verify that the event lived up to the organizer’s commitments.
